Sam English – The Life, Work, and Times of an Artist

By Sam English and Ann Dallman

Sam English has wanted to put together a coffee table book of his art for many years. And Sam, being the creative artist he is, wanted this book to “be fun” for his readers, something they could enjoy looking at as they appreciated his art.

Sam is also well known for his work in the recovery movement and is tireless in spreading the word that addictions (alcohol, drugs, etc.) can be overcome. That message is woven beautifully throughout the pages.

The book features more than 85 reproductions of this premiere artist’s poster prints. But, art, and artwork spanning this artist’s significant career of more than 30 years, is the focal point of the book. Its 160 color pages are filled with “the life and times” (and art!) of Sam English.

"It’s been my experience as an urban Indian to experience inter-tribalness through urban areas. I try not to paint one tribe, I’m not into painting one tribe. I see more and more inter-tribalness in Indian country and on reservations because of our young people experiencing the journey outside of Indian country into the world.

We should be out into the world. It’s part of the continuation of a sober journey, a responsible journey, going beyond the tragedy of American Indian history, the tragedy of colonization, the tragedy of the onslaught of Christianity, the tragedy of boarding school issues, the tragedy of trying to change who we are."

~ Sam English
